The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger

The books that touched the lives of headliners in the music industry, television, movies, law, publishing, and sports are the subject of a survey released February 22, 2001 by the National Education Association.

We asked our respondents about their favorite children's book and their favorite adult book.

  • Bill Gates, Chairman and CEO Microsoft Corporation
"The Catcher in the Rye was assigned reading for me in seventh grade. I think the reason everybody in the world connects with this book is because it's about being isolated—just slightly outside of what you perceive to be the norm. It's the ultimate story of being a little bit on the outside, and I think everybody sort of regards themselves as being that way. And the language! It was the first book I ever read that made me laugh out loud."

"Winona Ryder is an avid reader of 1960s literature (Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac), but also F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jane Austen, Aldous Huxley, Oscar Wilde, and many more. All-time favorite book is ""The Catcher in the Rye"" by J.D. Salinger.

Winona says ""Catcher In The Rye"" remains one of her all-time favourite novels. She often mentions in interviews how she calls it her personal bible and how many times she's read it (100 at last count!)"
