Efron is best known for his appearances in the Disney Channel Original Movie High School Musical and Summerland. He will also be starring in the film version of the Broadway musical Hairspray. Speaking to Newsweek in June 2006, director Adam Shankman described Efron as "arguably the biggest teen star in America right now."
Says in school he was a bookworm and a nerd. However, some of his teachers say he was also a joker and Zac agrees.
Zac Efron's favorite books:
- Busting Vegas: A True Story Of Monumental Excess, Sex, Love, Violence, And Beating The Odds by Ben Mezrich
"He loves an American TV show World Series of Poker. His fascination with the world of gambling continues with his favourite book Busting Vegas by Ben Mezrich, the story of a young maths genius who discovers a system to beat casinos."
- Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe
(classics, literature and fiction)
Book I'm reading: Naruto Volume 7.
ARE YOU A BIG FAN OF COMICS?
I love them. Spider-Man's probably my favorite. You see, Batman is a billionaire and there's nothing really cool about a billionaire saving the world. But Spider-Man is Peter Parker, a conflicted character who puts on a suit and saves the world. I love that. I'd love to play Spidey - but Tobey [Maguire] beat me out. I'm just kidding - I never auditioned for Spider-Man.
- Essential Amazing Spider-man, Vol. 1 By Stan Lee
(children books, literature and fiction, sci-fi, teens)
Why should you listen to him?
Actor Zac Efron's career began when he was just 11 years old, and his parents took note of his tremendous singing talent. They let him audition for a production of Gypsy, and he won a small roll. The show ran for 90 performances, and Efron took to the stage like a fish to water. He graduated to larger roles in other plays like Auntie Mame, The Music Man, and Little Shop of Horrors, before eventually making the transition to TV. Before long, he'd scored a recurring role on the hit series Summerland in 2004. This would seem like his big break, but an even bigger role would come the next year, in the hugely popular Disney feature High School Musical. Efron immediately earned a strong, loyal fan base, and by 2007, he was appearing in the highly anticipated remake of the John Waters musical Hairspray
