Bill Gates' favorite books include The Catcher in the Rye and The Great Gatsby, but--judging from Amazon.com's "purchase circles" rankings for the company--the literary taste of other Microsoft employees is a bit more hard-core. Gates' own book tops the list (it's always good to know what the boss is thinking), followed by a half-dozen programming references, two critiques of bad software design, and a history of the Microsoft-Netscape wars. If this list suggests something about Microsoft's corporate obsessions, then the Apple Computer bestsellers are even more revealing: Apple's Top Five at Amazon.com include an "inside Apple" expose, a science fiction novel, and three Harry Potter pre-teen adventure tales.
